HOW OVEREXERTION IN SPINNING FITNESS CAN LEAD TO RHABDOMYOLYSIS, BY DR BENJAMIN ANG
Rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition caused by extreme muscle breakdown, can occur when exercise intensity exceeds
the body’s capacity, a risk highlighted by two recent cases involving women who attended their first spinning class.
Dr Benjamin Ang explains that beginners are particularly vulnerable due to muscle deconditioning, where
unconditioned muscles struggle to cope with sudden high-intensity exertion.
He emphasises that when muscles are damaged, they release large amounts of protein into the bloodstream,
which can overload the kidneys and, in severe cases, require Dialysis.
